Where to stay in Cervera de Pisuerga: the best areas

Cervera village

The village has the services you will not find in the valleys: a supermarket, petrol station, pharmacy, bars and restaurants serving mountain cooking. Staying in its streets lets you have dinner without the car and stroll among mansions and arcades. The park visitor centre, the Casa del Parque, is close at hand for information on routes and trail conditions before you set off.

The CL-626 towards Guardo and Aguilar and the CL-627 towards Potes over the Piedrasluengas pass start here, so it is a good road junction.

Ruesga and the reservoir

A few kilometres away, Ruesga looks out over the reservoir of the same name, surrounded by oaks and with Curavacas on the horizon. It is a tiny, very quiet village, popular with couples and with those who set out early on walks. At night all you hear is the forest. Bring warm clothes even in summer, because the nights are cool.

La Pernía and Piedrasluengas

Heading north on the Potes road you enter La Pernía, with mountain villages such as San Salvador de Cantamuda and its Romanesque collegiate church. The rural houses in this valley are the choice for those who want to watch wildlife at dawn or cross into Liébana in a day. The bends and changeable weather matter in winter, so check the road conditions.

Towards Salinas de Pisuerga

Downstream, on the way to Aguilar, the villages are flatter and easier to reach. They serve as a base for families who want to combine mountains and Romanesque without driving over passes. The villages in this part of the valley, on the banks of the Pisuerga, have spacious rural houses with meadows around them. They are also close to the main road, welcome when it snows or freezes, and you are soon in Aguilar for lunch or shopping.
