Ciutat Vella and El Carmen

The old town has almost everything you will want to see: the cathedral and its Micalet tower, Plaza de la Virgen, the Silk Exchange and the Central Market. The El Carmen quarter, with its narrow streets and many murals, has the Serranos and Quart towers. Bars and terraces stay open late, especially around Plaza del Tossal. It is the ideal area for a first visit, because everything is walkable.

Best-rated in this area: Venecia Plaza Centro, with a score of 9.1 from 13,395 reviews.

Ruzafa

South of the town hall square, Ruzafa is the trendy neighbourhood for eating and drinking. It has its own market, cafΓ©s, small shops and a young crowd. It is next to EstaciΓ³n del Norte and the bullring, and close to JoaquΓn Sorolla, the high-speed train station, which makes it a good base if you arrive by train. The streets are lively at night, so look for a place a little away from the bars.

Best-rated in this area: ABCyou Bed&Breakfast, with a score of 9.0 from 3,568 reviews.

City of Arts and Sciences

If you are travelling with children, look at this area at the end of the Turia gardens. The Oceanogràfic, the Science Museum and the Hemisfèric are right there. The old riverbed is a park several kilometres long that takes you to the centre by bike or on foot. It is a modern area with wide streets, and parking is easier.

Best-rated in this area: Valenciaflats Ciudad de las Ciencias, with a score of 9.2 from 4,955 reviews.

Malvarrosa and El Cabanyal

To have the Mediterranean on your doorstep, stay near the seafront promenade. Malvarrosa and Las Arenas beaches are wide, with paella restaurants facing the sand. El Cabanyal, the old fishermen's quarter, still has houses with tiled façades. The tram and buses take you to the centre, or you can cycle along the bike lane that crosses the city. Good for summer trips or for combining beach and city.

Best-rated in this area: Banana Beach Patacona Rooms, with a score of 7.8 from 408 reviews.
