Where to stay in Alicante: the best areas

Explanada and Rambla

The centre, between the Explanada de España and the Rambla de Méndez Núñez, puts everything within walking distance: the port, the Central Market and shopping streets such as Avenida Maisonnave. For tapas, Calle Castaños and the streets around it are full of bars. It is the most practical area for a first visit to Alicante. The train station is a short walk from the centre, so it is also convenient if you arrive by high-speed train.

Santa Cruz quarter and El Barrio

At the foot of Santa Bárbara castle lies the old town. The Santa Cruz quarter has white houses, flowerpots and stairways climbing towards the fortress. Lower down, around the co-cathedral of San Nicolás, is El Barrio, with bars and late-night venues. It is a good base for nightlife, although some streets are noisy at weekends. If you want a quiet night, look in the upper, more residential streets of Santa Cruz.

Postiguet beach

If you want sand and the centre at the same time, Postiguet is the answer. It is the town beach, next to the old town and a short walk from the Explanada. The lift up to Santa Bárbara castle starts here. It gets busy in summer, so go early if you want a spot. In the evening the seafront stays lively and there are restaurants a few steps away.

Best-rated in this area: Meliá Alicante, with a score of 8.4 from 8,280 reviews.

La Albufereta and San Juan beach

To the north, La Albufereta has a small, sheltered beach, and beyond it begins the long, open Playa de San Juan. It is the favourite area for families and for anyone spending several days at the beach. The TRAM links these areas with the centre, so you don't need a car. The promenade is long and flat, ideal for walking or cycling. Out of season it is a quiet residential area.
