Where to stay in Bologna: the best areas
Historic centre and Piazza Maggiore
Around Piazza Maggiore, the Two Towers and the Quadrilatero there are hotels in old palazzi, apartments and guesthouses. It is the most convenient area for a first trip: everything is on foot under the porticoes and there are restaurants on every street. Some streets have restricted car access, so ask about parking.
Central station
Between the station and Via dell'Indipendenza there are plenty of city hotels, practical if you arrive by train or are taking day trips to Modena, Parma, Ravenna or Florence. From here you walk to Piazza Maggiore along an arcaded shopping street. It is a busy area at all hours.
University district and Santo Stefano
East of the Two Towers, the university district around Via Zamboni has a young feel, bars and simple apartments, with life until late. Further south, around Santo Stefano and Via Castiglione, it is quieter and more residential, with guesthouses and flats in grand buildings.
Trade fair and hills
To the north, by the exhibition centre, there are modern hotels with parking designed for business travellers or those driving, well connected by bus to the centre. At the opposite end, the hills to the south, towards San Luca, offer villas and places to stay surrounded by greenery, with views over the city and the plain.
