Where to stay in Catania: the best areas
Baroque centre
Around Piazza del Duomo, the Pescheria and the start of Via Etnea there are hotels in baroque buildings, guesthouses and apartments. The cathedral, Via Crociferi and Castello Ursino are on foot. At night the nearby bar streets are very lively, so choose carefully if you want to rest.
Via Etnea and Villa Bellini
Further up Via Etnea, around the Villa Bellini gardens, there are city hotels and apartments in a quieter, shopping-street setting. The centre is a walk downhill. It is a convenient area for the buses that go up Etna.
Station and port
Near the central station and the port there are practical hotels for those arriving by train or by bus from the airport, or taking day trips to Taormina and Syracuse. It is a transit area, less appealing for an evening stroll, but well connected. The centre is fifteen to twenty minutes' walk away.
Ognina, Aci Castello and Aci Trezza
To the north, the black lava coast has places to stay with sea views, from hotels to apartments and guesthouses. Aci Castello keeps its Norman castle on the rock, and off Aci Trezza rise the Cyclops sea stacks. To get to the centre you will want a car or the bus.
