Where to stay in Palermo: the best areas
Kalsa and La Marina
The Kalsa district, by the sea, has apartments, guesthouses and boutique hotels in restored palazzi. Piazza Marina, the Foro Italico promenade and the Martorana are a few minutes away. Its squares get lively at night, so choose your street carefully if you want quiet.
Cathedral and Quattro Canti
Along Via Vittorio Emanuele and Via Maqueda, between the cathedral and the Quattro Canti, there are many holiday apartments and mid-sized hotels. It is the most convenient area for seeing the Norman Palace, Piazza Pretoria and the Ballarò and Capo markets on foot. Some side streets are narrow and noisy, and car access is restricted.
Politeama and Libertà
North of the Teatro Massimo the modern city begins, with wide avenues, shops and city hotels, some of them upmarket. It is a tidier area and quieter at night, about fifteen minutes' walk from the historic centre. It also has good bus links to the airport and Mondello.
Mondello
Palermo's beach, at the foot of Monte Pellegrino, has hotels, apartments and holiday homes. In summer it is very lively, with seafood restaurants by the sea. The centre is half an hour away by bus, so it suits you if you are mainly coming for the coast.
