What to see in Ansó

Must-sees

Ansó lies at the western end of the Aragonese Pyrenees, in the valley of the same name, next to Navarre. Its old town is built of stone, with cobbled streets, steep-roofed houses and large conical chimneys. The old church of San Pedro now houses the Ethnological Museum of the Ansó costume, a traditional dress still worn at the village fiestas.

The valley is the other big draw. Following the Veral river north you reach Zuriza, an area of beech woods and meadows surrounded by mountains and the starting point for many trails. From there you can climb to Linza and the Mesa de los Tres Reyes. To the south, the Foz de Biniés is a narrow gorge carved by the river that is easy to walk through.

Free tours and guided visits

There are usually no free walking tours in Ansó. The usual options are visits to the costume museum and, above all, guided mountain outings: hikes around Zuriza and Linza, snowshoe routes in winter and trips to discover the plants and wildlife of the Valles Occidentales nature park. Tours to the Hecho valley, the Selva de Oza and San Juan de la Peña also run from the valley.

How long to spend

Two or three hours are enough for the village and the museum. With a full day you can add the Foz de Biniés and a walk around Zuriza. If you love the mountains, stay two or three days to do a longer hike and visit the Hecho valley, the Selva de Oza or Jaca.

Where to stay

The most practical choice is to stay in Ansó's old town, where the services and restaurants are, and head out on a different outing each day. If the mountains are what you're after, the Zuriza area is closer to the trails, though with less on offer. Another option is the neighbouring Hecho valley, to combine both valleys.
