What to see in Valldemossa

Must-sees

Valldemossa is a village in the Serra de Tramuntana, about twenty kilometres from Palma. Its main sight is the Royal Charterhouse, where Frédéric Chopin and George Sand spent the winter of 1838 to 1839, which she described in her book A Winter in Majorca. You can visit the cells, the old pharmacy and the church. Next to it is the Palace of King Sancho, of medieval origin, and gardens with views of the valley.

The old town is small, with cobbled streets and stone façades full of flowerpots. Many houses have tiles dedicated to Saint Catherine Thomas, who was born here, and you can see her birthplace. Try the coca de patata, the village’s typical sweet bun. Very close by, the road to Deià passes Miramar, linked to Ramon Llull, and Son Marroig, the estate of Archduke Ludwig Salvator.

Free tours and guided visits

Pay-what-you-like free walking tours are not common in Valldemossa. The usual is to visit the Charterhouse on your own or with a guide, and to take organised trips from Palma that combine Valldemossa with Deià and Sóller, sometimes with the vintage train. Guided hikes in the Tramuntana, which start from the village itself, and walks down to Port de Valldemossa, a small cove with fishermen’s houses, are also worthwhile.

How long to spend

You need about three or four hours for the village and the Charterhouse. Arrive early, because by mid-morning it fills with visitors. If you stay the night, spend the first day in Valldemossa and the afternoon at Miramar and Son Marroig. On the second you can go to Deià and Sóller or hike in the mountains. With two days you can enjoy the area without rushing.

Where to stay

Staying in Valldemossa itself is a good idea if you want calm, because in the evening, when the tours leave, the village returns to its silence. There are small hotels and stone houses in the old town and on the surrounding estates. If you prefer more restaurants and transport, Palma is close and buses to the village leave from there. Deià is another quiet option on the same road.
