Agüimes historic centre

The stone streets around the church of San Sebastián are lined with ochre, red and white houses, many of them turned into rural hotels with inner courtyards. The Plaza del Rosario, with its benches and terraces, is where the town gathers at dusk, and bronze sculptures appear on every corner.

It's the choice for couples, for those seeking peace and quiet and for anyone who wants to walk to dinner through a traffic-free centre.

Best-rated in this area: La Casona Canaria Boutique Home B & B, with a score of 9.0 from 183 reviews.

Guayadeque and Temisas

The Guayadeque ravine runs up towards the island's summit, with cave houses still lived in, a hermitage set in the rock and restaurants carved into the mountain. Above it, the village of Temisas sits among olive trees and terraces, with stone houses and a very rural feel. This suits hikers and travellers who want total silence and don't mind driving narrow winding roads, especially at night.

Arinaga

On the municipality's coast, Arinaga has a long seafront promenade, a town beach and fish restaurants. To the south is Playa del Cabrón, one of the best-known diving spots on the island. The constant wind attracts windsurfers and kitesurfers. The apartments here suit families who want the sea without the big resorts of the south.

Ingenio and Cruce de Arinaga

If you need to be near Gran Canaria airport, the neighbouring town of Ingenio and Cruce de Arinaga, beside the GC-1 motorway, have functional accommodation and supermarkets. They work for business stays, short stopovers or early-morning arrivals, and put both Las Palmas and Maspalomas within easy reach by motorway. The old town of Agüimes is a few kilometres up the road.
