Where to stay in La Orotava: the best areas

Old town

The cobbled streets between the town hall square, La ConcepciΓ³n and Calle de San Francisco, home to the Casa de los Balcones, gather the mansions with wooden balconies. Staying here lets you stroll at night through almost empty streets and have breakfast in the cafΓ©s on the square. There are few beds, almost always in restored mansions with wooden courtyards.

The slopes are very steep and parking in the centre is difficult, so look for somewhere with parking or leave the car outside.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Rural Victoria - La Orotava, with a score of 8.7 from 1,556 reviews.

Villa de Arriba

Above the old town spreads the Villa de Arriba, the oldest district, around the church of San Juan del Farrobo. It is residential and quiet, with traditional houses and views down the valley to the sea. It suits you if you want a village feel and don’t mind walking uphill.

The valley midlands

Scattered across the slopes, among vineyards, vegetable plots and chestnut trees, are rural cottages with gardens and views of Teide. They are a little closer to the road up to the national park, so they suit anyone wanting to hike in the mountains. A car is essential here.

Puerto de la Cruz

Below, by the sea, Puerto de la Cruz has much more choice and street life. The centre, around Plaza del Charco and the fishing quay, is full of restaurants. The MartiΓ‘nez area has the Lago pools and the beach, and Playa JardΓn is the easiest for swimming.

In the upper part, the La Paz district is next to the Botanical Garden. There are frequent buses between Puerto de la Cruz and La Orotava, so you can sleep by the sea and come up to the town for the morning.
