Plaza del Charco and the old town

Plaza del Charco, with its Indian laurels, is the town’s meeting point. Around it are the fishing quay, the Casa de la Real Aduana and the church of Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia, as well as streets of Canarian houses with wooden balconies. Here you have fish restaurants and local life until late. It is the place for anyone who wants to do everything on foot. The bus station is close, with routes to Santa Cruz and other parts of the island.

Best-rated in this area: DWO Nopal, with a score of 9.0 from 2,766 reviews.

Martiánez and Avenida de Colón

On the east side, Lago Martiánez, designed by César Manrique, has seawater pools beside the ocean. Avenida de Colón and the promenade to Martiánez beach are lined with buildings with Atlantic views, shops and terraces. It is the classic tourist area, very convenient if you are travelling with children or want a pool regardless of the state of the sea.

Best-rated in this area: Apartamentos RF Bambi Adults Only, with a score of 8.4 from 2,746 reviews.

Playa Jardín and Punta Brava

West of the old town, Playa Jardín combines dark volcanic sand with gardens and paths, also bearing Manrique’s signature. Next to it stands San Felipe castle; a little further on, in Punta Brava, is Loro Parque. The area is more open and has less foot traffic than the centre.

It appeals to families and anyone who wants a proper beach on the doorstep.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel RF San Borondon, with a score of 8.3 from 3,937 reviews.

La Paz and Taoro

Higher up, the La Paz neighbourhood and the Taoro park area are more residential and green. Nearby is the Botanical Garden, created in the 18th century to acclimatise tropical plants. From the viewpoints you see the coast and, in good weather, Teide. To get down to the promenade there are slopes and steps, or you can use the car or bus. From here the road to La Orotava and the national park is easy to reach.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Don Cándido, with a score of 10.0 from 2,263 reviews.
