Where to stay in Morro Jable: the best areas

Old town and harbour

Morro Jable began as a fishing village, and that part still climbs the hillside by the harbour. The streets are narrow and steep, with steps and simple houses. Below are bars and restaurants where you can eat the catch of the day alongside locals.

Ferries to Gran Canaria and excursion boats leave from the quay. If you are crossing to the other island or want a less touristy feel, this is your area. Mind the slopes if you are carrying luggage.

Best-rated in this area: Apartamentos NataLis, with a score of 8.9 from 845 reviews.

Playa del Matorral and the lighthouse

To the east begins Playa del Matorral, kilometres of pale sand with the Morro Jable lighthouse right on the seafront. The promenade runs alongside, with shops, restaurants and terraces. Behind lies the JandΓa salt marsh, with boardwalks for birdwatching. It is the area for stepping straight onto the sand and strolling at sunset.

Solana Matorral

The largest tourist area is called Solana Matorral and climbs the hillside above the beach. There are plenty of large complexes with pools and apartments with terraces facing the Atlantic. People who choose it usually want rest, good weather and a short walk down to the beach.

Esquinzo and Butihondo

Further north, on the road to Costa Calma, are Esquinzo and Butihondo. They are developments separate from the town, with coves and beaches at the foot of ravines and very little street life. You need a car or bus to dine out.

In return, you are halfway between Morro Jable and Costa Calma. To reach Cofete beach or the lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula, the dirt track starts in Morro Jable: you will need a suitable vehicle or an organised trip.
