Where to stay in La Palma: the best areas

Santa Cruz de La Palma

The capital looks out to sea from the east of the island. Its pedestrian Calle Real links Plaza de EspaΓ±a, the church of El Salvador and the Renaissance town hall, and the houses with wooden balconies line the Avenida MarΓtima. There is a port, shops and everyday life all year round. It suits people travelling without a car, because the island’s main buses leave from here.

Best-rated in this area: Pisos El Puerto, with a score of 8.4 from 109 reviews.

Los Cancajos and BreΓ±a Baja

South of the capital, Los Cancajos is a resort with a black-sand beach protected by breakwaters, good for swimming with children. It has restaurants, apartments and a seafront walk. The airport is very close, which is useful for short stays or early flights.

Aridane Valley

On the western side, the valley takes in Los Llanos de Aridane, El Paso and Tazacorte. Los Llanos is the island’s largest town, with a Plaza de EspaΓ±a shaded by Indian laurels and streets decorated with murals. El Paso is the gateway to the Caldera de Taburiente and La Cumbrecita viewpoint, and Tazacorte has a port and a beach. From here the volcanic landscapes of the south are close.

Fuencaliente

At the southern tip, Fuencaliente combines vineyards on volcanic ash, the San Antonio volcano and the salt pans by the lighthouse. There are rural houses and quiet places to stay. It is a good choice if you like wine, walks across lava and clear skies.

The green north

San AndrΓ©s y Sauces and Barlovento are the island’s wettest side. From here you are close to the Los Tilos laurel forest and the natural pools of Charco Azul. It is for hikers and anyone looking for calm, with a car, because the road has lots of bends.
