Where to stay in La Gomera: the best areas

San SebastiΓ‘n de La Gomera

The capital receives the ferries from Los Cristianos, in Tenerife, and has the island’s bus station, shops and services. Staying here puts the Torre del Conde, Calle Real and San SebastiΓ‘n beach, by the port, within walking distance. It is good for short stays, for anyone who does not drive or for catching the boat back without rushing.

Valle Gran Rey

At the western end, the ravine opens into a valley of palms and terraces with several villages by the sea: La Calera, perched on the hillside, La Playa and La Puntilla, facing the sand, and Vueltas, with its small harbour. It is the part of the island with the most restaurants, apartments and evening life. It attracts travellers staying a week, families and anyone who wants sun and swimming. The drive to San SebastiΓ‘n is long and full of bends.

Hermigua and Agulo

On the greener, wetter north side, these two villages look out over the Atlantic among banana plantations and traditional houses. Agulo keeps a cobbled centre, with the Abrante viewpoint nearby. Hermigua has a natural pool by the sea and quick access to the Garajonay trails. Rural houses dominate here, for hikers and travellers looking for calm.

Playa Santiago

On the south coast, this former fishing village has the island’s airport a few kilometres away and a drier, sunnier climate. The walk along the pebble beach has bars and restaurants. It suits you if you want almost guaranteed good weather and a quiet base, with a road to AlajerΓ³ and the south of Garajonay.

Best-rated in this area: Apartamentos Bellavista Gomera, with a score of 8.8 from 274 reviews.

Vallehermoso

In the north-west, the village grows at the foot of Roque Cano, with a lively square and rural houses in the ravines. It is handy for the north of Garajonay and Vallehermoso beach.
