Costa Calma centre

Costa Calma, which also appears on maps as CaΓ±ada del RΓo, spreads out on both sides of the FV-2 road among planted pines and palms. In the centre are the supermarkets, restaurants and shops, and heading down you reach several white-sand beaches with shallow water.

Families appreciate that the sea shelves gently and the wind is less of a nuisance than in other parts of the island. At night it is quiet, with the odd terrace open and little else. Anyone looking for a party should look at other parts of the island.

Best-rated in this area: R2 Maryvent Beach Apartments, with a score of 9.1 from 695 reviews.

Sotavento and Risco del Paso

To the south begins Sotavento beach, with its tidal lagoon and sandbanks. It is home to the windsurfing and kitesurfing centres, and to the constant wind that people who do these sports look for. Staying on this side keeps you close to the water for lessons. Further south, Risco del Paso has sand with almost no buildings.

Best-rated in this area: Welooveyou Solymar Calma & Pool - Starlight Vv, with a score of 9.1 from 156 reviews.

La Pared

Across the isthmus on the west coast is La Pared, a small development facing the open Atlantic. Here the sea is rough and the beach of rock and dark sand is for surfing, not swimming. It suits you if you surf or want to watch the sunset over the ocean in silence. For everything else you depend on the car.

La Lajita

North along the FV-2 is La Lajita, a fishing village with a pebble beach and boats pulled up on shore. Next to it is Oasis Park, the animal park and botanical garden, a popular outing with children. It is a more local, simple alternative, with direct access to the road for touring the centre and north of Fuerteventura.
