Puerto Viejo and Playa Chica

At the western end of the town is the original centre, with the fishing boat quay and white houses running down to the water. At night it is the liveliest part away from the avenue: terraces over the harbour, fish dinners and quiet strolls.

Next door is Playa Chica, a small cove with a rocky seabed where the diving schools are based. If you come to dive or snorkel, you can walk straight into the water from the street. The streets are hilly, something to bear in mind with pushchairs or heavy cases.

Playa Grande and the central avenue

The central stretch of the promenade is the heart of the resort. In front of you is the sand of Playa Grande and behind, an unbroken row of bars, shops and restaurants. It suits you if you want to step out and have everything within walking distance, from the beach to dinner and drinks. Bus stops on the avenue connect you with Arrecife.

Los Pocillos

To the east the avenue opens out and the buildings spread apart. Here is Los Pocillos beach, long, wide and with plenty of room even in high season. It is an area for families and anyone who wants the beach without so much bustle. The promenade carries on along the sea, so you can walk or cycle to the centre.

Matagorda

The last stretch before the airport is Matagorda, with large resorts with pools and a coastline of small coves. It is the option if you arrive on a late flight or leave very early. In return, you will hear the planes and the atmosphere is more resort than street.

Tías

A few kilometres inland is Tías, the main town of the municipality, with Canarian village life and holiday rentals. You need a car, but you are well placed to head up to La Geria and Timanfaya without crossing the resort.
