Vegueta

Vegueta is the district where the city was born. Here you have Santa Ana cathedral, the Casa de Colón and the Museo Canario, on cobbled streets with houses with wooden balconies. It is the area chosen by culture-focused travellers who want calm at night, although on Thursdays and weekends there is a bar scene on Calle Mendizábal and around. For the beach you will need to take the bus.

Best-rated in this area: Boutique Hotel Cordial Plaza Mayor de Santa Ana, with a score of 9.2 from 1,941 reviews.

Triana and San Telmo

Separated from Vegueta by the road that runs along the old Guiniguada ravine, Triana is the shopping area of the old town. Its Calle Mayor de Triana is pedestrianised and full of shops. Nearby are the Pérez Galdós Theatre, the Gabinete Literario and San Telmo park, with its bus station, from which lines run all over the island. It is a very practical base if you are not hiring a car.

Best-rated in this area: Sercotel Hotel Parque, with a score of 8.8 from 6,880 reviews.

Ciudad Jardín and Alcaravaneras

Halfway between the two ends of the city is Ciudad Jardín, a residential district of houses with gardens around Doramas park and the Pueblo Canario. Next to it, Las Alcaravaneras beach has calm water and a more local feel. It is a quiet area for families or long stays, with good bus links to Vegueta and Santa Catalina.

Best-rated in this area: Santa Catalina, a Royal Hideaway Hotel - Gran Lujo, with a score of 9.2 from 3,065 reviews.

Las Canteras and Santa Catalina

If the beach is your thing, this is the area. Las Canteras is a long city beach, with a natural reef that calms the water and a promenade from end to end, from La Puntilla to the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium. Behind it is Santa Catalina park, full of terraces and home to the city's second big bus station.

It is lively by day and night, and the favourite area for anyone spending several days in the city.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel LIVVO Lumm, with a score of 9.0 from 2,818 reviews.
