Historic centre

The dressed-stone streets around the dark-stone church of San Juan Bautista are where to sleep if you want to get to know Arucas at an unhurried pace. Nearby are the municipal park, the cafés on the square and the rum distillery. At night the centre is quiet and there is hardly any noise.

The choice is small, mostly renovated houses and apartments. Frequent buses leave the bus station for Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Best-rated in this area: Loft Gran Canaria, with a score of 9.5 from 69 reviews.

Banana farms and the Montaña

Around the old town, among the banana plantations, there are rural cottages and old farm estates. They are close to the Jardín de la Marquesa and the road up the Montaña de Arucas, with its viewpoint over the coast. With a car they make a comfortable base for exploring the north of the island.

Bañaderos and El Puertillo

On the municipality’s coast, Bañaderos and El Puertillo are fishing districts with low houses facing the sea. El Puertillo has a small beach and natural pools among volcanic rocks, much used by locals. The atmosphere is simple and local, with the odd fish bar. It suits you if you prefer to wake to the sound of the waves and swim every day.

Best-rated in this area: Bañaderos by SHC, with a score of 9.8 from 18 reviews.

Firgas

A few kilometres inland, Firgas is a small town known for its mineral water and its two decorated promenades: the Paseo de Canarias, with tiled coats of arms and maps of each island, and the Paseo de Gran Canaria, with its stepped cascade. There are rural cottages in its upper districts, surrounded by greenery and ravines, with a slightly cooler climate than on the coast.

Best-rated in this area: Loft Gran Canaria, with a score of 9.5 from 69 reviews.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

If you want a city beach and more nightlife, the capital is a short bus or car ride away.
