Plaza de España and Calle Castillo

The shopping and business centre revolves around Plaza de España, facing the docks, and the pedestrianised Calle Castillo, which runs up from Plaza de la Candelaria. From here you can walk to the Nuestra Señora de África market, the church of La Concepción and the Museum of Nature and Archaeology. There are lots of shops and daytime life, and it is close to the Intercambiador, where buses leave for the whole island and the tram runs to La Laguna.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Adonis Plaza, with a score of 7.8 from 6,751 reviews.

El Toscal

Behind Calle Castillo, El Toscal is a district of narrow streets and low, colourfully painted houses. It has old-style taverns and small restaurants, and a neighbourhood feel. It is a good option for couples and anyone who prefers a district with character a few steps from the centre.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Taburiente S.C.Tenerife, with a score of 8.6 from 4,907 reviews.

Las Ramblas and García Sanabria

Las Ramblas form a tree-lined boulevard with open-air sculptures skirting the upper edge of the centre. Next to it is García Sanabria Park. The area is residential, with quieter streets. It suits long stays or anyone looking for rest without being far away. To reach the centre, just walk down a few streets.

Cabo Llanos and the Auditorium

South of the centre, next to the Auditorio de Tenerife, the Castillo de San Juan and the César Manrique Maritime Park, is the Cabo Llanos area, with modern buildings, offices and the Palmetum. It is the most convenient option for business and conferences, and for anyone attending a concert.

San Andrés and Las Teresitas

To the north-east, the fishing village of San Andrés sits next to Las Teresitas beach, with its golden sand, and is the gateway to the roads into Anaga. It has fish restaurants and plenty of calm, though few places to stay. It is for anyone coming to swim and hike in Anaga. Buses link it with the Intercambiador.
