Tejeda village

The village clings to a slope overlooking the caldera, with viewpoints facing Bentayga and Nublo. Its sloping streets have almond sweet shops, bars and Canarian restaurants, as well as the Museum of Traditions. There are small hotels, apartments and village houses. It is the place for those who want services on foot and an early start for the trails. At night there is hardly anyone about.

Cruz de Tejeda

A few kilometres higher up, this pass is the crossroads of the island’s centre. The roads from San Mateo, Artenara and Tejeda meet here, and old royal paths lead off to several villages. The Parador occupies a stone building overlooking the caldera, and beside it are stalls selling fruit and sweets and donkey rides. Sleeping here puts you high up, with very clear skies and cold nights. It suits walkers and photographers.

Best-rated in this area: Parador de Cruz de Tejeda, with a score of 8.8 from 2,581 reviews.

La Culata and the caldera hamlets

At the bottom of the caldera, La Culata and other hamlets are scattered among terraces, almond trees and ravines. From La Culata a steep path climbs to Roque Nublo. Almost everything here is rural houses, perfect for switching off, cooking and walking. The road is narrow and winding, and you will rely on the car for shopping or eating out.

Best-rated in this area: Casita el Parral, with a score of 9.3 from 22 reviews.

Artenara

To the north-west, Artenara is the highest village on Gran Canaria and keeps cave houses carved into the rock, some fitted out for guests. It has a cave chapel, the Virgen de la Cuevita, and viewpoints over the caldera. It is close to Risco CaΓdo and the Tamadaba pine forest. It is an alternative for those who want to sleep in a cave and explore the north of the summit.
