Where to stay in El Hierro: the best areas

Valverde and the east coast

The capital is the only place with the feel of a small town. It has the town hall, the church of La ConcepciΓ³n, shops and most services, and it is close to the airport and to La Estaca port, where boats arrive from Tenerife. It sits high up, so it is cooler and often cloudy.

Down towards the sea, Tamaduste and La Caleta have holiday homes and calm natural pools, a good option for families arriving without a car for the first few days.

El Golfo

The great volcanic amphitheatre in the north brings together Frontera, Tigaday and Las Puntas, among banana plantations, vineyards and cliffs. It is the liveliest area outside the capital and usually has better weather than Valverde. Here you will find the Charco Azul, the La Maceta pools, the Guinea Ecomuseum and, up above, the Mirador de la PeΓ±a, designed by CΓ©sar Manrique.

It suits anyone who wants to swim on the coast and hike along the cliffs.

La Restinga

At the southern tip, this fishing village is the divers' base. Opposite lies the Mar de las Calmas marine reserve, with clear water sheltered from the wind. There are dive centres, fish bars and a very simple atmosphere. If you do not dive you may find it a little isolated, although the water is good for swimming and sunbathing on the jetty.

El Pinar

In the south-centre of the island, Taibique and Las Casas make up El Pinar, surrounded by Canary pine forest. There are rural houses and plenty of silence, and you are halfway between La Restinga and Valverde. Trails leave from here to the Hoya del Morcillo recreation area. To get around El Hierro you need a car: buses are few and the roads are very winding.

Best-rated in this area: GuestReady - El Pinar isla del Hierro, with a score of 9.6 from 22 reviews.
