What to see in Agüimes

Must-sees

Agüimes is in the east of Gran Canaria and has a well-kept historic centre. Its cobbled streets, colourful houses and quiet squares invite you to wander slowly. The neoclassical church of San Sebastián dominates the centre. Next to it is the Plaza del Rosario, the town's meeting point. Around the streets you'll see several bronze sculptures depicting scenes of traditional life.

Close by is the Barranco de Guayadeque, shared with Ingenio. It's a deep ravine with cave houses, a hermitage carved into the rock and restaurants inside caves. On the coast, the municipality stretches down to Arinaga, with its promenade and beach. The area is also known for its wind, which draws windsurfers.

Free tours and guided visits

Free walking tours are uncommon here. The most common options are guided visits of the historic centre, which explain the history of the old episcopal lordship, and routes through the Barranco de Guayadeque, including its visitor centre and the cave houses. Excursions also leave from Agüimes for the island's interior, towards Roque Nublo and Tejeda, and to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to explore Vegueta.

How long to spend

You need about two or three hours for the historic centre. If you add the Barranco de Guayadeque and lunch in a cave, allow a full day. With two days you can add the Arinaga coast and a trip into the interior of Gran Canaria. Mornings in town are quiet and the temperatures pleasant.

Where to stay

To get to know the town, the historic centre is best, with rural hotels and restored old houses. From there you can walk to the squares and restaurants, and you're a few minutes' drive from Guayadeque. If you prefer the sea, Arinaga has apartments near the promenade. The airport is close by, which makes Agüimes a practical base when arriving on or leaving the island.
