Centre and Plaza de España

The heart of Alcoy sits on the plateau between the Riquer and Molinar rivers. Around the Plaza de España are the town hall and the church of Santa María, and from it runs Calle San Nicolás, where the Moors and Christians parades pass. A few steps away are the Casa del Pavo, the Círculo Industrial and the museum devoted to the festival.

If you want to explore the modernista buildings and the bridges without relying on the car, this is your area. Bear in mind there are slopes, as the centre is surrounded by ravines. On festival days the streets fill with music and parading troupes until late.

El Ensanche

Crossing the San Jorge bridge, with its art deco decoration, you reach the Ensanche. It's a district of straight streets, multi-storey buildings, shops and cafés. The feel is residential and the streets are less steep than in the old town.

It's mainly chosen by business travellers or those arriving from the motorway who prefer to get in and out of town without entering the maze of the centre. To reach the Plaza de España you just walk across the bridge.

Outskirts towards the Font Roja and Mariola

Alcoy is surrounded by mountains. To the south is the Carrascal de la Font Roja Nature Park and to the north the Serra de Mariola, with trails, masías and springs. On the outskirts you'll find rural houses and country accommodation for those coming to hike or cycle.

A car is essential here, both to get into town and to reach the trailheads. In return, you get silent nights and mountain views. The greenway leaving the town, with tunnels and viaducts of the old railway, is another good reason to stay in this part.
