Where to stay in Calpe: the best areas

Arenal-Bol and the old town

Arenal-Bol beach stretches south of the PeΓ±Γ³n, in front of the centre of Calpe. From here it is a short climb to the old town, with its narrow streets, the Old Church, the watchtower and the painted steps. On the promenade are the Roman remains and a long row of restaurants and ice-cream parlours. It is the liveliest area by day and night, and the convenient one if you do not have a car.

La Fossa and the PeΓ±Γ³n

On the other side of the PeΓ±Γ³n, La Fossa beach, also called Levante, has a front of tall apartment blocks and a long promenade. It is the beach families tend to choose, with sand and a calm atmosphere, and it suits you if you want to set off early to climb the PeΓ±Γ³n. At the end of La Fossa is the small RacΓ³ cove, with a rocky seabed for snorkelling.

Port and Cantal Roig

Between the two beaches, next to the entrance to the nature reserve, are the fishing port and Cantal Roig cove. It is a compact area: you have the fish restaurants, the fish market and the start of the PeΓ±Γ³n trail close at hand. From here you can walk both to La Fossa and to the salt flats, where you often see flamingos. It is a good option for couples who want to get up early and climb the PeΓ±Γ³n before the heat.

Best-rated in this area: Port Europa, with a score of 8.1 from 6,350 reviews.

Coastal developments

To the south, towards Altea, and to the north, towards Benissa, the coast is full of developments of villas and apartments above small coves, such as Maryvilla or the Puerto Blanco area. You gain silence and sea views, but almost all have steep slopes and few services nearby. With a car, on the other hand, Altea, Moraira and Guadalest are easy to reach. Check the location carefully before booking, because some are far from any sandy beach.
