Where to stay in Elche: the best areas

Historic centre and Plaça de Baix

The old town lies on the west bank of the Vinalopó. Here are the Basilica of Santa María and the Palace of Altamira, and a few steps away stands the Calahorra tower, next to the Arab Baths. Plaça de Baix, with the town hall, is the meeting point. Around it are the Central Market, La Glorieta and pedestrian streets with shops, cafés and tapas bars.

Staying here lets you see almost everything on foot and go out to dinner without the car. In August, during the Misteri, it is the liveliest part of town and also the first to fill up.

Best-rated in this area: Apartamento de Esther y Javi, with a score of 9.7 from 74 reviews.

The Palm Grove and Huerto del Cura

The palm orchards surround the centre and cross the city. The Municipal Park is right next to the old town, and across the river are the Palm Grove Museum and the Huerto del Cura. Staying beside these orchards means shade, flat walks and quieter streets at night, something families with small children appreciate.

From here you walk across to the old town over the bridges on the Vinalopó.

Altabix and the University

East of the river, Altabix is a residential district with wide avenues and everyday shops. The Miguel Hernández University campus is here, which is why it is chosen by lecturers, students and people coming for conferences or work meetings. The Huerto del Cura is nearby, and the centre is a walk away along the riverside path.

Carrús and the stations

Elche has two Cercanías stops on the C-1 line between Alicante and Murcia: Elx Parc, right in the centre, and Elx Carrús, in the district of the same name. Carrús is a residential area with lots of shops and neighbourhood bars, and few tourists.

It suits you if you will be travelling by train towards Alicante or are visiting family in the city. For the historic centre, the train to Elx Parc is the most direct option.
