Where to stay in Guadalest: the best areas

El Castell and the Arrabal

Sleeping in El Castell de Guadalest lets you go through the rock tunnel to the upper part first thing, before the coaches arrive. Below, in the Arrabal, are the shops, restaurants and main car park. The village houses are few and small, made for couples seeking silence and views over the reservoir.

At night the village empties and only the odd bar stays open. Plan where to have dinner. The streets of the upper part are stone with steps, so a backpack is better than a wheeled suitcase.

Best-rated in this area: El Tossal, with a score of 9.4 from 1,509 reviews.

Benimantell

A short way along the CV-70 road, Benimantell has its core of whitewashed houses and several roadside restaurants serving mountain cooking. There are more rural cottages than in Guadalest and it feels like a lived-in village. It suits families and anyone wanting to walk towards the Sierra de Aitana.

Beniardà and the reservoir

Beniardà overlooks the north shore of the Guadalest reservoir. From here you can go down to the water and follow the path around the lake. It is the quietest area in the valley and appeals to cyclists, walkers or anyone simply wanting to rest. The village is small, with a square, a church and few services, so bring food if you plan to cook.

Benifato and the slopes of Aitana

Benifato is a tiny village on the slopes of the Sierra de Aitana, with farming terraces and views over the valley. It is well placed for hikers who want an early start on the routes to the summit. There are few beds and basic services, so arrive with your shopping done if staying several days.

If you prefer to sleep by the sea, the Marina Baixa is down the valley, with Altea, Callosa d'en Sarrià or La Nucia on the way.
