Old town

Staying at the top of the town is the way to enjoy Altea once the day visitors have gone. You have the church square, with its blue domes, the viewpoints over the bay and cobbled streets with restaurants and small galleries on your doorstep. It is very popular with couples and anyone travelling without young children.

Bear in mind that it is all slopes and steps, and cars can barely get in. Travel light or ask beforehand where to park.

Best-rated in this area: Blue Sardine Hostal Boutique Altea, with a score of 9.2 from 2,861 reviews.

La Roda and the promenade

Below the old town, the promenade looks out over La Roda, a pebble beach, with terraces, ice-cream parlours and shops. Here you have the sea in front of you and the historic centre a short walk uphill. It is the liveliest area in the evening and the most convenient for families, because it is flat and has services at hand. From here you can also walk north and south along the shore.

Best-rated in this area: Blue Sardine Hostal Boutique Altea, with a score of 9.2 from 2,861 reviews.

Cap Negret and the marina

To the north, past the marina, the coast becomes quieter. Around Cap Negret there are apartments and developments facing a pebble beach with very clean water. It is a good option for long stays and for anyone who wants silence. You can walk to the old town along the shore.

Best-rated in this area: Hostal El Trovador, with a score of 8.5 from 1,334 reviews.

Altea la Vella

The old village inland is surrounded by orchards and developments of houses with gardens, at the foot of the Serra de Bernia. It is much quieter than the coast and suits hikers or anyone looking for a house with a pool. A car is essential here.

L’Albir

South of Altea, in the municipality of l’AlfΓ s del Pi, l’Albir has a promenade, a pebble beach and the path to the lighthouse across the Serra Gelada. There are plenty of apartments and a quiet, family atmosphere.
