La Villa

The medieval quarter occupies a hill above the rest of the town. Sleeping inside its walls means having the caves, the keep and the Gothic churches on your doorstep, and strolling at night through almost empty streets. There are few beds and the streets are narrow, so leave the car outside.

It suits couples and those coming to see the heritage over a weekend. Inside the walls is also the Wine Museum, in the Palacio del Cid, a good place to start understanding the area before visiting the wineries.

Las Peñas and El Arrabal

At the foot of La Villa are the other two historic quarters: Las Peñas, with whitewashed houses on the slope, and El Arrabal, spreading across the flat. Daily life in Requena is in El Arrabal and the Ensanche: shops, tapas bars, the main avenue and the market. Parking is easier here and all services are at hand.

Requena station, with local trains to Valencia, is in this part. The Requena-Utiel high-speed station is on the outskirts, and you need a car or taxi to get there.

Hamlets and wineries

Requena’s municipality is huge and dotted with hamlets among the vineyards, such as San Antonio and El Pontón. In them and in the countryside there are rural houses and wineries that let rooms. It is the option for wine tourism, for families who want space or for those after silence. You will depend on the car, including for dinner in La Villa, so sort out who drives if there is a tasting. In return, you wake up among Bobal vines and can visit several wineries in one morning without going back to town.
