What to see in Arucas

Must-sees

Arucas is in the north of Gran Canaria, about twenty minutes from Las Palmas. Its great landmark is the church of San Juan Bautista, a neo-Gothic building of dark local basalt. Because of its size many people call it a cathedral, although it is a parish church. Around it spreads a historic centre of cobbled streets, dressed-stone façades and wooden balconies.

Next to the centre is the municipal park and, on the outskirts, the Jardín de la Marquesa, a botanical garden with species from several continents. From the Montaña de Arucas you get a fine view of the north coast and the banana plantations. The town also has a long rum-making tradition, with a century-old distillery you can visit.

Free tours and guided visits

Arucas has no regular free walking tours. Most people explore the old town on their own or as part of guided excursions around the north of the island, which usually combine Arucas with Firgas, Moya and Teror, home to the basilica of the Virgen del Pino. The rum distillery visit, with a tasting, is another very common guided option. For free walking tours, head to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, especially Vegueta and Triana.

How long to spend

Arucas is easily seen in half a day. Start with the church and the old town, continue to the municipal park and finish by climbing the mountain for the sunset or exploring the Jardín de la Marquesa. If you have a full day, add Firgas and Teror, which are close and fit on the same northern route.

Where to stay

Arucas has few hotels, although around it you will find rural cottages among banana plantations and farms, good for anyone seeking calm. The most practical option is usually to stay in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Vegueta and Triana are ideal for strolling the historic quarter, and the Las Canteras area combines a city beach with a good choice of restaurants. From there you reach Arucas by car or bus in no time.
