Where to stay in Ayllón: the best areas

Historic centre and Plaza Mayor

Inside the old enclosure, between the entrance arch and the Plaza Mayor, you sleep a step from everything people come to see. The Palacio de Contreras is by the gate, the church of San Miguel is on the square itself and the slope leads up to Santa María la Mayor. Here too are the bars and restaurants serving roast lamb and other local dishes.

At night the town empties of day visitors and the stone streets fall silent. If you stay in the upper part, near the climb to the Martina tower, you'll have views over the rooftops and the plain, at the cost of a few slopes.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Rural El Adarve, with a score of 9.4 from 89 reviews.

By the Aguisejo river

Outside the arch, in the flat area by the Aguisejo river and the N-110 road, the streets are wider and you can drive right up to the door. It's the newest part of town. It suits you if you're travelling with children, have a lot of luggage or will be heading out on trips every day. The old town is a short walk away with hardly any climb to the square.

Red villages and the Sierra de Ayllón

To the south, on the slopes of the sierra, are Madriguera, Villacorta and other villages of reddish stone, with rural houses and whole-house rentals. They're tiny hamlets with few services, so you need a car to eat or shop. In return you get dark skies, hiking trails from the door and a country atmosphere that suits couples and groups of friends.

For more shops and restaurants without leaving the area, Riaza has an arcaded main square and a bit more going on. From there you can also drive up to the La Quesera pass and the La Pinilla ski resort.
