Inside the walls

The walled enclosure is small and can be crossed on foot in a few minutes, so anywhere inside puts you next to Santa María del Azogue, the bookshops, the bookbinding workshops and the Fundación Joaquín Díaz. The best part of staying here comes when the visitors leave: you can climb the wall-walk at dusk and watch the light fade over Tierra de Campos with almost nobody around.

There are few rural houses and places with very few rooms, so book ahead for weekends. Cars are usually left by the wall and you walk in, so bring a light overnight bag. Inside there's a bar and a couple of places to eat, with short opening hours out of season.

Outside the walls and La Anunciada

Outside the walls, at the foot of the hill, the land opens out towards the plain and the cereal fields. From this side you're close to the hermitage of La Anunciada, the Romanesque church many travellers come specifically to see. It's a quiet option for those who prefer to have the car at the door and set off in the morning without fuss. The walled village is an uphill walk away, and the path between them is pleasant late in the day, when the summer heat eases.

Medina de Rioseco and Tordesillas

If you can't find a room in Urueña, these two towns have more on offer and combine well with the visit. Medina de Rioseco has the arcaded Rúa Mayor and large churches such as Santa María de Mediavilla. Tordesillas, on the Duero, has the Royal Monastery of Santa Clara and an arcaded main square. Both are livelier at night and have more restaurants. Urueña is right by the A-6 motorway, making it easy to come and go by car from either.
