Where to stay in Toro: the best areas

Plaza Mayor and the Clock Tower

The street that starts under the Clock Tower is the town’s backbone. It leads to the arcaded Plaza Mayor and is full of wine shops, bars and eateries. Nearby is the Mudéjar brick church of San Lorenzo el Real. Staying here puts you at the heart of daily life in Toro: you go out to dinner and are back in a moment.

The streets of the old town are narrow. If you are driving, leave the car in the car parks at the entrance and walk in.

Best-rated in this area: Alda Ciudad de Toro, with a score of 8.3 from 1,738 reviews.

The Collegiate Church and El Espolón

At the end of the old town overlooking the Duero are the Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor and the Espolón viewpoint. It is the quietest part and the one with the views: the plain, the river and the bridge at your feet. If you stay nearby you can watch the sunset from the viewpoint and see the Portico of Majesty first thing, without groups.

Duero plain and the Puente Mayor

At the foot of the hill, by the river and the old stone bridge, the landscape turns to market gardens, poplars and flat tracks. It feels more like countryside than town. It suits those who want to walk or cycle along the bank. To get up to the old town you need a car or strong legs, because the climb is steep. From below, the view of the town above the escarpment is one of the loveliest.

Wineries and the A-11

Vineyards and wineries of the denomination are scattered around Toro, some with rooms. It is the choice for those travelling for the wine who want to taste without worrying about driving back. On the Duero motorway you are close to Zamora and Tordesillas, so it also works as a base for exploring the province.
