Where to stay in Tordesillas: the best areas

Plaza Mayor and the old town

The square, arcaded Plaza Mayor is the centre of Tordesillas. Under the arches are bars and terraces, and in the streets leading off it are the church of San Antolín, with its sacred art museum, and the rest of the shops. The old town is small and you can walk across it from end to end.

Staying here suits those who come to see the town at leisure and want a drink on the square as evening falls. The central streets are narrow, so if you arrive by car look for somewhere with parking or leave the car on the edge of the old town.

Santa Clara and the Treaty Houses

In the upper part overlooking the Duero are the monastery of Santa Clara, once Peter I's palace, and the Treaty Houses, where the division of the world between Castile and Portugal was signed. It is the quietest area of the old town, with viewpoints over the river and the plain. It suits those who want to visit the monastery first thing.

South bank of the Duero

Crossing the medieval bridge you reach the other bank, from where you get the classic view of Tordesillas, with the houses and towers above the water. This bank is quieter and pleasant for walks along the Duero. Getting back to the centre means crossing the bridge, a walk worth doing for its own sake.

A-6 and A-62 junction

Tordesillas sits at the junction of the A-6, heading to Galicia, and the A-62, which continues to Salamanca and Portugal. At the exits of both there are roadside places to stay for those stopping a night on a long journey. It is also a good position for visiting the Rueda wineries to the south, or Medina del Campo and Toro.
