Where to stay in Peñafiel: the best areas

Plaza del Coso and the old town

The Plaza del Coso, an earth-floored square surrounded by wooden balconies, is the village's meeting point. A few streets away are the church of San Pablo and the Clock Tower, and all over the centre there are asadores serving lechazo, milk-fed lamb roasted in a wood oven.

It is the area for those who want to see Peñafiel on foot and have dinner without driving after a tasting. It appeals to couples and groups of friends on a wine and food break.

Best-rated in this area: AZZ Peñafiel Las Claras Hotel & Spa, with a score of 8.8 from 123 reviews.

Castle slope and the cellars

Below the castle hill, in the streets climbing the slope, the zarceras (ventilation chimneys) of the underground cellars dug into the earth poke out. From here you walk up to the castle and the Provincial Wine Museum. It is a quiet area with views, but with slopes, so bear that in mind if you have heavy luggage.

Banks of the Duratón and the Duero

The river Duratón runs through the village and joins the Duero just north of the old town. Along its banks are walks and green spaces, welcome in summer. Staying around here gives you calm and fresh air without being far from the centre. It is a good choice for families, because children have space to run and the castle can be seen from the riverside.

Curiel, Padilla and the N-122

Around the village are small villages among the vineyards. Curiel de Duero has its own castle on a hill and Padilla de Duero sits next to the Vaccaean site of Pintia. Towards Valladolid, the N-122 runs among vines and big-name wineries, a stretch known as the Milla de Oro, the Golden Mile.

Sleeping outside the village makes sense if you are driving and want to wake up among the vines. For dinner you will have to travel, because these villages have little on offer.
