Where to stay in Puebla de Sanabria: the best areas

Upper town of Puebla

The upper part of Puebla, between the castle, the town hall square and the stone slopes, is the most charming area. The façades are stone, with wooden galleries and slate roofs, and at night hardly any cars pass. It suits couples and those who want to feel the atmosphere of a medieval town.

Bear in mind that car access is limited and the slopes are steep. If you have a lot of luggage, ask where you can stop to unload.

Lower town by the Tera

At the foot of the hill, by the bridge over the river Tera and the approach road, is the more modern part. Shops and restaurants are concentrated here, and parking is easier. From here you walk up the slope to the upper town. Sanabria AV station, with high-speed trains between Madrid and Galicia, is in Otero de Sanabria, very close to Puebla.

El Puente and Galende

On the road to the lake you come to El Puente de Sanabria and Galende, two villages with services and rural houses. They lie halfway between Puebla and the water, so you can combine walks around the town with afternoons swimming. They suit families travelling by car who want some space.

Lakeshore and San Martín

If nature is your thing, look for somewhere near Lake Sanabria, in Ribadelago, Vigo de Sanabria or San Martín de Castañeda. You will have beaches such as Los Enanos, Viquiella or Custa Llago and the natural park trails close at hand.

San Martín, higher up, has a monastery and wide views over the lake. It is the most convenient starting point for going up to the Laguna de los Peces. In winter this area is cold and very quiet, with few services open.
