Where to stay in Sepúlveda: the best areas

Plaza de España

The arcaded square, with the castle remains in the background, is the centre of everything in Sepúlveda. Around it are the asadores, where wood-oven roast lamb is almost compulsory, and shops selling local produce. Sleeping here lets you get around the village without a car and linger over lunch without thinking about roads.

From the square, slopes climb towards the church of El Salvador and others drop towards Santa María de la Peña. Be ready to go up and down a lot, because the whole village is on a slope.

Best-rated in this area: Posada de San Millán, with a score of 9.4 from 809 reviews.

Upper quarters and viewpoints

The highest streets, by El Salvador, and those overlooking the ravines of the Duratón and the Caslilla have rural houses with views of the gorges. They are quieter than the square and appeal to couples looking for sunsets and silence, with vultures gliding over the rock walls. Bear in mind that some streets are narrow for large cars.

Around the Casa del Parque

The old church of Santiago houses the natural park visitor centre, where they give information on routes and trail conditions. Staying in this part of the village is convenient if you come to walk or see griffon vultures and want to call in for information before setting off. Remember that some parts of the canyon have restricted access at certain times of year to protect the birds.

Villaseca and Carrascal del Río

Downstream, Villaseca and Carrascal del Río are closer to the San Frutos hermitage and the trails along the canyon. They are small villages, with rural houses and little else, and very dark skies at night. You will need a car to eat in Sepúlveda or move between routes, but you will save time if your plan is to spend the day in the natural park.
