Where to stay in Covarrubias: the best areas
Old town and Plaza de Doña Urraca
Covarrubias is small and its centre comes down to a few cobbled streets between Plaza de Doña Urraca, the collegiate church of San Cosme y San Damián and the tower of Fernán González. If you sleep here, the half-timbered houses and arcades are on your doorstep and you can go out to dinner without thinking about the car. At night you hear almost nothing.
Beds are scarce, especially on summer weekends. Book early.
Best-rated in this area: Hotel Doña Sancha, with a score of 9.4 from 266 reviews.
Along the Arlanza
The village stretches towards the river, where there are tree-lined walks, the bridge and room for children to play. It is the coolest part in summer and appeals to families or anyone wanting a walk as evening falls. From the riverbank the path leads to the chapel of San Olav, dedicated to Princess Kristina of Norway. The centre is a very short stroll away.
Outskirts and rural cottages
Around the village there are rural houses with land and views over the fields and hills of the valley. They suit large groups and anyone preferring to rent a whole house for several days, with their own kitchen and parking. With a car the village is a moment away, and the road to Lerma is close too.
The Arlanza valley towards Hortigüela
Downstream, the road leads to the ruins of the monastery of San Pedro de Arlanza, by Hortigüela. The villages in this part of the valley are small with very few services, but they have rural stays and are well placed for visiting the monastery of Silos and walking the La Yecla gorge boardwalk. It is an option for seeing the area at a relaxed pace, driving each day.
