Where to stay in Santo Domingo de Silos: the best areas

Around the monastery

The streets around the Benedictine abbey are the place for those who come for the cloister and the Gregorian chant. If you sleep here you can go to vespers in the evening, have dinner in the village and return to the church in the morning without thinking about the car. At night you can hardly hear a thing.

It suits travellers seeking calm and those coming for a short retreat. Check the service times when you arrive, because they change from day to day.

Rest of the village

Silos is small and you can walk across it in no time. In the streets a little further from the monastery there are stone houses turned into rural accommodation, some with fireplaces. They suit families or groups who want to cook and have more space, and are still a short walk from the abbey. In winter Silos is cold and it sometimes snows, so a house with heating and firewood is welcome.

On the way to La Yecla

Very close to the village begins the Yecla gorge, explored along walkways over the ravine. The country houses on this side of Silos appeal to those who want to walk first thing, before the visitors arrive, and spend the rest of the day in the Sabinar del Arlanza.

The setting is low mountain and a car is necessary. Bring comfortable shoes and water, because there are no services in the gorge.

Santibáñez del Val

Santibáñez del Val is a few kilometres from Silos and keeps the Mozarabic chapel of Santa Cecilia on its outskirts. It is a very quiet village with the odd rural house, perfect if you cannot find a room in Silos or prefer an even more rural atmosphere. From here it is also easy to head to Quintanilla de las Viñas, Covarrubias or Lerma. The road to Silos is short and has very little traffic.
