Where to stay in Aguilar de Campoo: the best areas

Plaza de España and the old town

The long, arcaded Plaza de España concentrates the bars, terraces and many of the town's restaurants. Staying in the nearby streets puts you within walking distance of the collegiate church of San Miguel and the path up to the castle and Santa Cecilia. Aguilar has a railway station on the Palencia to Santander line, so you can also arrive without a car.

It is the liveliest area at aperitif and dinner time, and the one that works best for a short stay without a car. The A-67 runs past the town, so heading to Cantabria or Palencia is straightforward.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Marqués de Aguilar, with a score of 8.8 from 1,596 reviews.

By the Pisuerga and Santa María la Real

On the riverbank, a short walk from the square, is the monastery of Santa María la Real. This area is greener and quieter, with riverside walks and easy access to the reservoir road. It suits those who come to study the Romanesque or want to start the day with a walk before taking the car.

Shores of the Aguilar reservoir

West of town, the reservoir forms a large sheet of water surrounded by small villages. In summer there are bathing areas, sailing and canoeing, and walks along its shores. If you are travelling with children or want the outdoors, the rural places to stay in these villages put the water on your doorstep.

Romanesque villages of the valley

To the south, following the Pisuerga, are Mave, with its monastery, and Olleros de Pisuerga, with its church carved into the rock. In these villages and their neighbours there are stone rural houses very well placed for touring the Romanesque and visiting the Las Loras Geopark. They are small places with hardly any services, so a car is essential and it is worth planning dinner ahead.
