Where to stay in La Alberca: the best areas

Old town and Plaza Mayor

Sleeping among the timber-framed houses puts you a step from the Plaza Mayor, the church and the shops selling cured meats and honey. When the streets empty in the late afternoon, the village gets back its rhythm and you can stroll without crowds. The places to stay are rural cottages and small hotels in mountain buildings, often with steep stairs and low-ceilinged rooms.

You will have to leave the car outside the old town, as parking among those streets is almost impossible. Bring a light bag: the ground is uneven stone.

Best-rated in this area: Antiguas Eras La Alberca, with a score of 8.7 from 1,136 reviews.

Outskirts and the roads out

On the roads out of the village there are larger hotels, several with a pool, garden and parking. The old town is a short walk away and, being already on the road, you are quickly on the climb to the Peña or the Portillo pass, which leads down to the Las Batuecas valley. They suit families and anyone planning to tour the mountains every day.

Mogarraz

A few kilometres east, Mogarraz has an old town as well preserved as La Alberca’s and far less visited. Its façades display portraits of the village’s former inhabitants, and at night the atmosphere is very peaceful. The choice here is small: rural cottages and the odd small hotel. From its viewpoints you see the valley full of terraces, olive trees and vines.

San Martín del Castañar and Sequeros

Further east, San Martín del Castañar has a castle with the cemetery inside its walls, and Sequeros is very close on the same slope. Both are surrounded by chestnut woods and are a good place for anyone after silence and walking routes. From here La Alberca is a short drive along a winding road.
