Plaza Mayor and the cathedral

Inside the walls the town fits into a stroll. If you sleep between the Plaza Mayor and the cathedral of Santa María, you step outside and have the town hall arcades, the palaces and the taverns a few steps away. At night, once the day visitors leave, the cobbled streets are almost empty and the silence is part of the charm.

It is the area for a short break of two or three nights. Many noble houses have been converted into accommodation, so you can sleep among stone walls and wooden beams.

Best-rated in this area: Parque Florida, with a score of 9.4 from 2,888 reviews.

Castle and the Águeda bank

At the end of the wall facing the river, Henry II's castle houses the parador. From here you are soon down at the bridge of Roman origin and the walks along the Águeda. This corner of the old town suits those who want country views and some green nearby, while still walking to the centre. If you are travelling with children, the wall walk is usually a hit.

Best-rated in this area: Crisol Conde Rodrigo, with a score of 8.4 from 2,457 reviews.

El Arrabal del Puente

Across the Águeda, over the bridge, is the Arrabal, a district of low houses with open views of the walled skyline. It is a quiet area with small places to stay and the odd local bar. You walk back to the old town over the river, and at dusk, with the walls floodlit, the return is very charming.

Newer town and road exits

Outside the walls, in the streets opening towards the motorway and the road to Portugal, there are larger hotels with their own parking. They suit those making a stop on the way to Portugal or wanting an early start to Siega Verde, the Sierra de Francia or Almeida without battling narrow streets.
