Plaza Mayor and Calle Santiago

The arcaded Plaza Mayor, with the town hall, is the centre of everything. From it runs Calle Santiago, pedestrianised and full of shops, down to Plaza de Zorrilla. Going out for pinchos is a deep-rooted custom here. It is the best base for a short break, as you can see almost everything on foot. Next to the square, Calle Correos and the streets around it are packed with pincho bars.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Mozart, with a score of 8.6 from 6,666 reviews.

Cathedral, San Pablo and San Gregorio

North of the Plaza Mayor are the cathedral, the church of Santa María la Antigua and Plaza de la Universidad. A little further on are the façade of San Pablo and the Colegio de San Gregorio, home of the National Sculpture Museum. It is a monumental area, quiet at night, ideal if you are interested in art or want rest without leaving the centre.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Mozart, with a score of 8.6 from 6,666 reviews.

Campo Grande and the station

Campo Grande park, with its peacocks, separates the centre from the railway station. Paseo de Zorrilla and Calle Miguel Íscar surround it with elegant buildings and shops. It suits you if you arrive by train or bus, as both stations are close by. It is also a good starting point if you are driving to tour the wineries of Ribera del Duero or Rueda.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Boutique Gareus, with a score of 9.1 from 3,462 reviews.

Las Moreras and the Pisuerga

By the river, Paseo de Isabel la Católica and Las Moreras beach offer a green setting for walking or running. Across the Pisuerga is the Science Museum. It is a residential area, with fewer tourists and a short walk from the Plaza Mayor.

It works well if you are travelling with children, driving or fancy starting the day with a riverside walk.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Imperial, with a score of 8.6 from 6,297 reviews.
