Where to stay in Ribadavia: the best areas
Praza Maior and the castle
The arcaded Praza Maior is the centre of everything in Ribadavia. Around it are the town hall, the Castle of the Counts and the streets leading into the old town. If you stay here, you have the taverns where you order Ribeiro in a cup and eat octopus right at your door.
This area fills with people during the summer festivals, something to bear in mind if you want calm.
Jewish quarter
The alleys of the old Jewish quarter, between the Praza Maior and the Gothic church of Santo Domingo, have few houses converted into accommodation. In return, you sleep in the most evocative part of town, among stone and balconies. It is for travellers who put charm first and do not mind carrying a suitcase over cobbles.
Station and the Miño bank
The lower part of town, next to the railway station on the Ourense to Vigo line, lets you arrive and leave without a car. From here you walk up to the old town in a short stroll. Towards the Miño are the Prexigueiro open-air hot springs, a relaxing way to end the day. It is the best area if you are travelling around Galicia by train and using Ribadavia as a stopover.
Avia valley vineyards
Up the river Avia, the landscape fills with terraced vineyards and pazos and farmhouses converted into rural tourism. Many Ribeiro wineries are a stone's throw away, and some offer visits and tastings. It is the best option for a wine break or a long stay as a couple. A car is essential here, and do not drink if you are driving. From these hamlets, the monastery of San Clodio, in Leiro, is a short drive away.
