Where to stay in La Toja: the best areas
La Toja island
La Toja is separated from O Grove only by an arm of the estuary crossed by a short bridge. Almost all of it is taken up by pine woods, gardens, a golf course and the big spa hotels that use the island’s thermal waters. If you are coming to rest, sleeping here is the most convenient: you go from the spa to a walk along the shore without touching the car. Do not miss the San Caralampio chapel, covered outside with scallop shells, and walk the shore at sunset.
At night the island is very quiet. To eat out, you walk across the bridge and are soon in O Grove.
O Grove, harbour and centre
Central O Grove looks out over the Arousa estuary from its fishing harbour. It has seafood restaurants, tapas bars, supermarkets and all kinds of apartments. Catamarans showing the mussel rafts leave from the quay. Choice here is wider than on the island and there is life almost all year, appreciated by groups and those who want to eat out every night.
San Vicente do Mar and Pedras Negras
In the south of the peninsula, facing the Atlantic, San Vicente do Mar has fine-sand beaches, rocky coves and the small Pedras Negras marina. From there a lovely coastal path sets off. It is an area of holiday homes and apartments, popular with families in summer. Out of season many businesses close.
A Lanzada
On the isthmus joining O Grove to the mainland stretches A Lanzada beach, long, open and with surf, beside the chapel of the same name. Places to stay around it suit you if you want a big beach and are getting around by car, including towards Sanxenxo.
