Historic centre and Praza Maior

Allariz's old town can be walked in no time, and staying inside lets you see it empty early in the morning and at dusk. The Praza Maior, the Romanesque churches, the Santa Clara convent and the shops on the cobbled streets are all close by, as are the places selling almendrados, the local almond biscuits, to take home. If you stay for a weekend, the night-time stroll through the lit streets is one of the highlights.

There are many restored stone houses and places with just a few rooms. Traffic is very restricted, so check beforehand where to leave the car.

Vilanova and the banks of the Arnoia

Across the medieval bridge is Vilanova, with its church and an even quieter feel. From here you step straight onto the riverside walk, with restored mills, wooden boardwalks and meadows to sit in. It's a good choice for families, thanks to the nearby Museo do Xoguete toy museum and green spaces, and for those who want to walk by the water first thing. Its streets are residential with hardly any cars, so it makes for a very restful stay.

Surrounding villages

The municipality is surrounded by villages with rural guesthouses, hórreo granaries and vegetable plots. Staying in one gives you space and silence, though you'll depend on the car for every outing. The A-52 passes very close, making it easy to visit Ourense and its hot springs, the Ribeiro or the Ribeira Sacra on the same trip. Choose a village close to the old town if you want to drive back for dinner without too many kilometres. Many houses have a garden or grounds, welcome if you're travelling with children or a dog. On rainy days, not rare around here, the stone fireplace is often part of the charm.
