Where to stay in Foz: the best areas

Centre and harbour

Foz’s centre clusters around the harbour at the mouth of the estuary. From any street in the centre you walk down to the quay, the terraces and A Rapadoira beach, which has sand right next to the houses. In the evenings people stroll along the water’s edge and the bars fill up, especially in July and August.

It is the convenient option for families with young children: supermarkets, a pharmacy, ice-cream parlours and sand without having to park every day.

Best-rated in this area: Monqar Playa Foz, with a score of 7.5 from 1,058 reviews.

Llas and Peizás

To the west the coast becomes more open and less built-up. The beaches of Llas and Peizás have fewer buildings around and more room on the sand, with scattered homes, campsites and houses with gardens. They suit couples or groups looking for beach days without the bustle who don’t mind driving into town for dinner.

Fazouro

A little further on, the parish of Fazouro combines hamlet and coast. Next to its beach you can visit the hillfort on the seashore, and the area has rural cottages surrounded by meadows. It is a spot for sleeping peacefully, walking along the shore and exploring the Mariña with your own vehicle.

Inland and San Martiño

Inland, around the basilica of San Martiño de Mondoñedo, you find restored stone houses and small rural stays. They suit anyone wanting to mix beach and heritage, head out on trips each day and come back to dinner in a country house, away from the harbour bustle.

From here or from the centre, As Catedrais beach lies to the east, in Ribadeo, and Mondoñedo inland, both a short drive away. For the former, check beforehand whether you need to book access.
