Parada de Sil

The small village of Parada de Sil, the main settlement of the municipality, has the area's few shops, bars and services. It sits high above the canyon, and roads lead from here to the viewpoints and monasteries. Staying here puts you in the middle of the route, with somewhere to eat without driving. At night there is very little going on, so check kitchen hours before you arrive.

Santa Cristina and the Balcones de Madrid

Heading down towards the river, among chestnut woods, is the monastery of Santa Cristina de Ribas de Sil, one of the best-known spots in the Ribeira Sacra. Very close are the Balcones de Madrid viewpoints, hanging over the canyon walls. In this area there are isolated rural houses with views of the valley.

It suits couples and those who want to hike from the door, especially in autumn, when the chestnut trees change colour.

Canyon hamlets

The municipality is dotted with stone and slate hamlets, many with houses restored for rural tourism. They are very peaceful places, with vegetable gardens, terraced vineyards and dark skies at night. From the highest ones you can see the river hemmed in between wooded slopes. Here a car is essential and the roads are narrow and very winding, so plan your journeys carefully.

Santo Estevo and the Nogueira bank

Across the Sil, in Nogueira de Ramuín, is the monastery of Santo Estevo de Ribas de Sil, on the edge of the area. From around it you can go down to the landing stage for the catamarans that sail through the canyon. It is a good alternative if you want to combine the boat trip with Ribeira Sacra wineries and have Ourense within reasonable driving distance.
