Where to stay in A Guarda: the best areas

The harbour and town

A Guarda lives facing its fishing harbour, famous for spiny lobster and lobster. Around it are the seafood restaurants, bars and colourful houses facing the quay. A little higher up are streets with emigrants' mansions and small squares.

This is the area if you want to eat seafood, dine out every night and walk everywhere. The bus station is also close, with connections to Tui and Vigo.

Area Grande beach

On the other side of the harbour, Area Grande is the town beach, with a promenade and open sea. The buildings here are mostly homes and summer apartments. It suits families in July or August who want a beach without a car, although the Atlantic is cold here even in high summer. In the evening the promenade fills with locals.

Monte de Santa Trega

Above the town rises Monte de Santa Trega, with its Celtic hillfort of round houses, the chapel of Santa Tecla and an archaeological museum. From the top you can see the mouth of the Miño, Portugal and the Atlantic coast. You can drive up a winding road or walk up a path from the town.

On the slope there are houses and places to stay with views, for those who prefer to wake up above the estuary and do not mind relying on the car to get down to dinner.

Camposancos and the river mouth

South of the hill, on the bank of the Miño, is Camposancos, with Muíño beach facing the sands of the river mouth and Caminha across the river. It is a peaceful setting of pine woods and waterside walks. It suits those looking for calm, birdwatching or cycling along the riverbank.
