Old Town and port

The stone streets of the centre lead down to the marina, where the replica of the Pinta is moored. Tapas bars and restaurants cluster around the collegiate church of Santa María and the street that follows the seafront. From here you can walk to the Monterreal fortress, and the town beaches of A Ribeira and A Concheira are close at hand.

It is the liveliest area at night, especially in July and August, and the one that lets you do without a car. In season, boats to the Cíes Islands leave from the port.

Best-rated in this area: Estela do Mar, with a score of 8.7 from 1,795 reviews.

Ladeira and Sabarís

East of the centre lies Ladeira beach, a long, open stretch of sand with dunes. Sabarís, the parish around it, has holiday homes, apartments and local shops. It suits families who want a wide beach and less bustle. You can walk to the port along the coastal path. Outside summer it feels almost like a residential village.

Best-rated in this area: Kampaoh Bayona Playa, with a score of 8.6 from 307 reviews.

A Ramallosa

On the border with Nigrán, A Ramallosa gathers around its medieval bridge over the estuary. It is a small centre with a market, bars and a quick road to Vigo. It appeals to those combining Baiona with visits to the city or the rest of the Rías Baixas. The buses between Vigo and Baiona stop here, a plus if you do not have a car.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Vasco Da Gama, with a score of 9.1 from 1,485 reviews.

Playa América and Panxón

Over in Nigrán, Playa América is a large town beach with a promenade, terraces and plenty of atmosphere in summer. Panxón, at the opposite end, keeps the feel of a fishing village beside Monte Ferro. Both areas are an alternative if you want more beach choice and a place a little larger than Baiona.
