Centre and Calle del Príncipe

Calle del Príncipe, full of shops and car-free, runs down to Porta do Sol, home to the Sireno sculpture. Around it are shops, cafés and Calle Urzaiz, which leads to Vigo-Urzaiz station. From here you can walk to the port and the ferry terminal, the departure point for boats to the Cíes Islands, Cangas and Moaña.

It is the best option if you want to get around on foot and combine the city with a trip to the islands. It also suits business travellers.

Best-rated in this area: NH Collection Vigo, with a score of 8.9 from 3,459 reviews.

Casco Vello

The old quarter climbs from the port towards Monte do Castro. On Rúa da Pescadería you can eat oysters outdoors, and between Plaza de la Constitución and the co-cathedral of Santa María there are taverns and bars that stay lively until late. The streets are steep and cobbled, so travel light. It is preferred by those travelling without children who want a night out.

Bouzas

To the west, Bouzas keeps the feel of the independent fishing town it was before joining Vigo. It has a promenade along the estuary, low houses and fish restaurants. It is quieter than the centre and halfway to the beaches, with Vitrasa city buses connecting it to the rest of the city.

Best-rated in this area: La Suite Hotel, with a score of 8.8 from 2,165 reviews.

Samil and Alcabre

If you are travelling in summer and the beach is your thing, the city's south coast has wide sandy beaches such as Samil, with a promenade, pools and play areas, and O Vao, a little further south. In Alcabre, by the estuary, is the Galician Museum of the Sea. The area has a family atmosphere, lots of terraces in summer and views of the Cíes, although the centre is several kilometres away and you will need the bus or car.

Best-rated in this area: Attica21 Vigo 4 Superior, with a score of 9.4 from 6,470 reviews.
